Tuesday Track Workout Dec 4, 2012

Tuesday Track Workout

Who would have thought that we would be have 65 degree temps at the begining of December!  This is one of those rare days and as we go deeper into December and January I am sure we won't many like this one.  So everyone should take advantage and join us tonight at 6:30 pm at the Wakefield High School Track, the address is 4901 South Chesterfield Road, Arlington, VA.

The workout tonight will be 4 x 800, 4 x 400. There will be a 400 jog after the 8s, and a 200 jog after the 4s.

Along with the stellar weather we have been fortunate to have the stadium lights on the last 3 practices.  Hopefully the trend continues, lights and nice weather is truly a miracle this time of the year!

I will see you out there!

9/18/12 Tuesday Track Practice has been Cancelled

Hello NOVA Runners,

Due to the severe weather threat throughout the DC area that is supposed to last well into the evening, Tuesday Track has been CANCELLED this week.  We stuck it out through some rough heat this summer, but tornadoes and thunderstorms are not to be fooled with.  Please hit the treadmill instead of running outdoors and take care when driving if caught in a severe thunderstorm.

See you next week,

Blood, Sweat and Mud

Standing at the starting line of the North Face Endurance Challenge Trail Half Marathon (NFECTHM) at Algonkian Regional Park in Sterling, VA, this past Sunday, I don't know if it was the decongestant I was taking for my head cold or the crisp late-Spring morning that had me calm and happy to be out for a run.  I had seemed to have forgotten I was about to be running for 2 hours on rough terrain at a hard, racing clip.  Though it was my 5th half marathon, this was truly a race to remember; it was my first TRAIL half marathon ... and VERY muddy trails at that.  I like to think I PR'ed (had a personal record - 2 hrs 14 min) since it was my first trail half, but the time was nearly 35 minutes slower than my road half marathon PR of 1:41 from just a few months ago.  This tells you something about the technicality and difficulty of the race course.

I've recently gotten more into "adventure" racing, which (for me) has included trail racing, mud runs with obstacle courses, and overnight team events (watch for more about the Ragnar Relay coming up later this year).  The race began at 8AM in a wet field that had already been made terribly muddy by the previous day's North Face Endurance Challenge races - 50 miler, 50 km and marathon.  The first half mile was on a concrete sidewalk that I would again look forward to at the end of the grueling race (because it was dry!).  The rest of the course involved various gravel, dirt, and muddy single- and double-tracks that ran along the Potomac Heritage Trail, which passes by the Trump National Golf Course and wonderfully quiet views of the Potomac River.  The first 3 miles were familiar to me as I've run this section of the course many times. It was moderately dry (relative to the rest of the course), flat, and not terribly technical footing.

Once past the golf course, however, the previous day's runners had cut a new course to avoid a massive mud pit through some very tall grass that contained thorns. I can understand why they cut the new path - seriously, who would want to have their shoes filled with mud at mile 3 of a 50 mile race?  But before I knew it, my right leg was cut up and blood was running down. Eh, no big deal really and I got some fun remarks on it during and after the race.  I'm quite proud of my wounds, as you can see.

Check out my wounds! Oh, yeah!
Almost immediately following this section were the steepest hills I've competed on since Georgetown Prep back in high school (which are probably just mole hills if I ever went back to that course).  I was shocked at how soon I found myself walking up and down hills. I take pride in saying that I eat hills for breakfast, so it's got to be pretty darn steep for me to walk a hill, especially during a race!  There were switchbacks, slippery downhills and more steep uphills before we were in the clear for the mile 5 water stop.  I don't know where those hills came from or what purpose they serve in geology, but North Face did a good job making that the icing on the trail cake.

Volunteers Needed Monday June 11, 2012

Please see the following request from Samantha Kirby.

Our school has a limited PTA and are in need of volunteers to help us man stations for our field day. Would it be possible to ask the club for help?  Most people will working but I am hoping that a few locals that are retired or have odd schedule may want to join us for the day. The date is Monday June 11th. We will have two field day sessions on that date. The first session K-2nd grade will be from 9:15 AM-11:45 AM.  The second session, 3rd-5th grade will be from 1 PM - 3PM.   We will need assistance handing out food at lunch time and help at the stations, which will consist of relays, scooters jump ropes, bubble blowing, running bases as in kickball or base ball and maybe volleyball.  The PM session will have field games like soccer, flicker ball, basketball, capture the flag, kickball and a jump rope area.

You can have anyone who is interested in help us in one or both sessions contact me at: samantha.kirby@apsva.us

Run Amuck!

Hey NOVA Runners,

I'm running Run Amuck on Saturday, June 16th at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, VA if you'd like to join me.  The length is approximately 3.5 miles and consists of 14 obstacles that are really not scary (though they describe it as strenuous), including "two punishing PT stations and two messy, muddy, murky mud pits, tough tire dash, strenuous spiderweb, backbreaking barbed wire crawl, tiring 20-foot pipe slither, elaborate A-frame climb, a cruel clamber up a cargo net and the forceful fire truck spray. The mud puts spans 60 feet in width, at least three feet deep and extend between 100 and 180 feet long. New obstacles introduced in 2012 include the gladiator hit n' run and the ammo can scramble."  The best part is the fire hose at the end because you can wash all the mud off!  I've run it once before and it was super fun, so I hope you can join me.

It's still open for registration, if you're interested.

Happy running!

Email from Aggi

I talked with Erin about weird races and this is one that serves beer at aid stations.

The coach probably won't agree but I think it's great to know there are fun races out there. Haven't decided yet if I will enter, but I am looking for more trail races. Anyone?

A Great Read from Das

Das sent me this article on the Marathon that was a pretty fun read, thought I would put it out there for everyone to enjoy.  Thanks Das.

Hi Guys,

Of course, most of us know the history of marathon's accidental route to 26 miles 385 yards. But, this article contains a few more interesting stories collected from a few books. Thought I should share. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/21/sports/the-marathons-accidental-route-to-26-miles-385-yards.html?hp

Cherry Blossom Results

We had some strong results today at the 40th running of the Cherry Blossom 10 miler, led by Jerry Doyle, who again put on a negative split show.  Mike "Coast Guard" Naff also had a brilliant performance after dealing with health issues for most of the winter.  We don't have the team results yet, but based off of last year, we are in pretty good shape to place very well.  Congratulations to ALL!
